ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
There are many reasons, but the main one is that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (or CBP) provides IP owners with very powerful tools to stop infringing 'articles' from entering the United States. The CBP offers a security net that is stationed at the border to help prevent and deter the admission of counterfeits and copy cats. For instance, in 2020, the CPB had a total of 646,822 "Enforcement Actions" between the Office of Field Operations (OFO) and the U.S. Border Patrol. In 2021, there have been 1,069,597 total enforcement actions through June. Simply put, recording your intellectual property will give you an extra layer of defense and is cost efficient.
The filing fee to record your U.S. Trademark is $190 per class.
The filing fee to record your U.S. Copyright is $190.
You must renew your U.S. Trademark recording in accordance with the deadlines to renewal your trademark registration with the USPTO. The first deadline is between the 5th and 6th year following your U.S. Trademark Registration. The second deadline is between the 9th and 10th year following your U.S. Trademark Registration. The third and all subsequent deadlines are every 10 years. The renewal fee is currently $80 per class.
