I won’t sugarcoat it. Our wonderful Social Security Administration DOES NOT make it easy to get approved for disability benefits. However, it is very possible if you can demonstrate you meet the legal requirement for disability. This is where it really helps to have a representative who understands the law and what it takes to win disability cases.
You should consider applying for Social Security Disability IF you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that is ‘severe’ and you feel you are unable to work, it is worth your while submit your information for a free claim assessment to receive some guidance and feedback about your chances for being approved for disability.
"SSDI" stands for Social Security Disability Insurance and is the more lucrative of the two types of disability benefits. SSDI eligibility is determined based on your work history and tax contributions over the past 10 years. If you have worked at least 5 of the past 10 years, you should have an "insured status". However, if your work history has been spotty, we suggest you call SSA at 1-800 772-1213 and find out your Date of Last Insurance. Claimants who can establish disability before their Date of Last Insurance expires can collect up to 12 months of backpay from the date they filed their intial application for disability benefits.
"SSI" stands for Supplemental Security Income and eligibility is determined not by work but based on having little income and assets. An approved claimant for SSI can collect retroactive benefits that would begin the date they file their initial application for disability benefits.
In 2023, it takes on average approximately 18-22 months to get approved for disability benefits. The main reason it takes this long is because over 80% of claims are denied early on in the process. The majority of approved claims require the attention of an Administrative Law Judge at a scheduled hearing.
